How to get your software recommended by ChatGPT

Your buyers ask AI which software to buy, so this is where those answers come from and how to get your name into them.

How to get your software recommended by ChatGPT

In this post

  1. toc

A buyer at a mid-sized brokerage opens ChatGPT on a Thursday night and types a simple question about which showing software works best for a team of forty agents. A few seconds later the answer names four products, explains each in a sentence and suggests two to demo. If your product is missing from that answer, you were never on the shortlist, and nobody on your team will ever know it happened.

To get your software recommended by ChatGPT, you have to be named in the places it reads. That means clear pages on your own site that say who the product is for, a presence on the review sites and roundup posts that answer engines trust, and enough consistent mentions across the web that the model is confident you belong on the shortlist.

There is no ranking factor you can buy and no tag that switches it on. There is a pattern, though, and you can see it for yourself in about ten minutes.

Get your software named by ChatGPT, clear pages and third-party reviews leading to a place on the AI shortlist

What we saw when we tested it

We searched for "proptech marketing agency" and "best proptech marketing agency" and read the AI Overviews Google showed. Our own page ranked third in the regular results and was even quoted for the definition at the top of the overview, yet the list of recommended agencies came almost entirely from third-party roundup posts. The agencies named in those roundups were the agencies named in the answer.

Answer engines summarize what other people say about you, so the job is to make sure the right people are saying it.

Where ChatGPT and AI Overviews get their software picks

Where ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews get their software recommendations, from your own pages, roundup posts, review sites, communities and the press
  • Your own pages. Clear category pages, comparison pages and pricing pages give the model facts it can quote. Vague hero copy gives it nothing.
  • Roundups and listicles. "Best X for Y" posts are the most direct source of shortlists, and they are often written by competitors or agencies who include themselves.
  • Review sites. G2, Capterra and similar directories give answer engines structured opinions from customers, which is exactly what a recommendation needs.
  • Communities. Reddit threads and industry forums show up constantly in AI citations because they read like honest advice.
  • Press and partners. Industry publications, podcasts and partner directories add the third-party confirmation that you exist and do what you say.

Seven steps to get your software named in the answer

  1. Say exactly who the product is for. Put the category, the buyer and the problem in plain sentences near the top of your main pages, so a model can lift a clean answer.
  2. Publish honest comparison and alternatives pages. Buyers ask "X vs Y" and "alternatives to X". If you do not answer, a competitor will answer for you.
  3. Get onto the roundups. Find the posts the AI cites for your category and ask to be included, with one proof point and a reason you fit. This is the fastest lever we know.
  4. Build review site profiles. Ask happy customers for reviews on the sites your buyers use, and fill the profile with the same category language as your site. We covered how in software review sites that AI answers trust.
  5. Show up in communities as a person. Answer questions on Reddit and industry forums under your own name. Selling there backfires, while being useful gets quoted.
  6. Make your site easy to read. Server-rendered pages, FAQ answers in plain sentences, structured data and fast indexing through tools like Bing Webmaster Tools all help answer engines see what you publish.
  7. Check where you stand every month. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the five questions your buyers ask, logged out, and record who gets named. It is the only scoreboard that matters here.

Five prompts to test this month

Run these in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google with your own category in place of ours, logged out, and keep a simple spreadsheet of who gets named.

  1. What is the best [category] for [buyer]?
  2. Which [category] tools do [buyers] use?
  3. [Your brand] vs [top competitor]
  4. Alternatives to [top competitor]
  5. Is [your brand] good for [use case]?

The pattern across those answers tells you which sources to work on next.

What answer engines tend to ignore

Answer engines tend to skip these, and so do the buyers reading them.

  • Pages that never say plainly what the product does or who it is for.
  • Copy packed with adjectives and no facts a model could repeat.
  • Content hidden behind scripts, logins or gated forms.
  • Brand claims nobody else on the web repeats.
  • Keyword-stuffed posts written for the search results of 2015.

Why one consistent sentence matters to ChatGPT

Answer engines build their picture of your product from many small descriptions. Your homepage calls it a leasing platform, your G2 profile calls it resident engagement software, a podcast host calls it a CRM for landlords and an old press release calls it something else again. A person can read all four and work out what you sell. A model reading the same pages sees four different products and grows less confident about recommending any of them.

So pick one sentence that says what the product is and who it serves, such as maintenance software for property managers with fewer than five thousand units, and use it everywhere. Put it at the top of the homepage, in every review profile, in the boilerplate of every press release and in the bio you send to podcast hosts. Ask partners to use it on their integration pages. Over a few months the web starts describing you the same way, and that consistency is one of the clearest signals you can give ChatGPT that your software belongs in the answer.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

You cannot pay for a place in the organic answer. ChatGPT has started testing ads, but the recommendations inside an answer come from what the model reads and trusts, which is why earned mentions and clear pages matter more than budget.

If you want the bigger picture, our answer engine optimization guide covers the fundamentals, and our SEO and AEO services do this work every week. For real estate software in particular, it is part of how we work as a PropTech marketing agency.

The first call felt like talking to someone who already understood our business. We didn’t have to explain the basics. They showed up with questions that mattered.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my product?

+

Make your own pages say clearly who the product is for, get included in the roundup posts and review sites answer engines cite, earn honest mentions in communities and the press, and check the answers monthly to see what changed.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

+

You cannot pay for a place in the organic answer, because recommendations come from what the model reads and trusts across the web, so earned mentions, reviews and clear pages matter more than ad budget.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

+

Changes to your own pages can appear within weeks once they are indexed, while new roundup mentions and reviews usually take one to three months to shift which brands get named.

Does ChatGPT use Google results?

+

ChatGPT's search feature pulls live results from the web through search partners, and it also leans on what the model learned in training. Being well indexed and widely mentioned helps on both.

What is generative engine optimization?

+

Generative engine optimization, also called AEO, is the work of making your brand and content easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and quote.
